Ryst-Dupeyron

Founded in 1905, this charming store on the posh Rue du Bac provides a range of top quality everyday wines, collectible bottles that range from 150-1,500 or more Euros per bottle (e.g., Chateau Petrus), and one of the best spirit collections in the city. Perhaps best known for its Armagnacs, Ryst-Dupeyron is perfect for buying a cadeau (gift) as they will label that special vintage from just about any year with a note and box it up in beautifully wrapped burgundy paper. For our anniversary, my wife bought me a 1988 Armagnac vintage, that read: “21 ans d’amour, Dave & Joy.â€

The bottle itself has a wax stamped ribbon to give it that extra special vintage look, and the top is sealed with red wax. The store will also label vintage port bottle with a special note, all at no extra charge.

The store has a 28 page booklet which lists all of its spirits, champagnes and wines available for store. Ryst-Dupeyron offers over 80 different vintages dating back to 1868. It is a great place to buy a bottle for someone’s birthday, from their birth year, and all vintage Armagnacs dating back to 1959 can be purchased for under 200 Euros (from 1969 all vintages are under 100 Euros). The store also has Port vintages dating back to 1937. Best of all, the store offers tastings of Armagnac and Port (the owner offered me different tastings at no charge – I didn’t even have to ask). The Bordeaux and Bourgogne collections are impressive, though the store’s mainly focuses on Bordeaux (they have over 600 vintages and selections from the region take up more than half of its 28 page booklet). I found the staff very helpful in picking wines for under 30 Euros – truly exceptional bottles of 1855 Grand Crus that offer tremendous value for the price. Similarly, the wines from Bourgogne, are top notch, and several stunning bottles can be purchased for under 30 Euros (e.g., Santenay 1er Cru Beauregard 2004 Louis Latour is only 21 Euros and a Volnay 1er Cru “En chevret†2004 Louis Latour is only 28 Euros).

The store also features specials with low price bottles still in their wooden crates at the entrance. Look for these specials as prices tend to be closer to 10-12 Euros a bottle. At these low prices a full crate (12 dozen total) is worth snapping up on the spot. Best of all, the owners and employees at Ryst-Dupeyron will help you narrow down your choices and recommend how much time the bottle should ideally sit in the cellar before drinking. Their 28 page booklet also notes the ideal drinking time for each wine – whether now, in a few months, or even in several years. Products can be delivered and ordered online. http://www.vintageandco.com.
