If you are passionate about literature, love reading or just want somewhere to go to escape from the hustle and bustle of Parisian life, Shakespeare and Company is definitely the place to go. It brings a little bit of a home comfort to Paris for us Anglophones and becomes a place of sanctuary for those of us who need it.
Originally founded by Sylvia Beach in 1919, this Parisian bookstore closed its Odéon location during WWII and re-opened its current location in the 5th arrondissement under George Whitman. Despite its name, the shop has solely American origins. However, you will find a whole range of books in English by authors from all over the world. Whether you’re looking for one of the classics or something more modern, the bilingual staff can most definitely help you out.
This small haven itself is still a wonder to me every time I enter the shop to be greeted by floor- to-ceiling shelves of books. I feel transported back to the early 1900s surrounded by this old and cosy interior and even more so when I take the rickety stairs up to the top floor. Authors, artists and readers all make their way to this floor, a peaceful area to relax and create whilst staring out at a view of Notre Dame. An extra cultural touch to this part of the store is the open piano where anyone can come in and show their talent.
Make sure to look out for any of their future events as they are a brilliant way to spend an evening and will be an experience that will not disappoint.
