Matthew Rose Art Exhibition in Montparnesse — God and Country

Paris-based American artist Matthew Rose presents a new series of major works on paper at STORIE in the Montparnasse quartier of Paris, opening Thursday, September 1, 2011. The new works target and recast religious icons, patriotism, gods and nature in a medium that the artist is well known for in both Europe and the United States. GOD & COUNTRY includes nearly 50 new works, plus a number of larger collage pieces, an edition of objects entitled “The Blood of Christ,†and a “wall paper†print edition, Birdpaper. As Mr. Rose explains, GOD & COUNTRY represents “the faces of belief in all things whether love, death, sex or indeed God and gods, and the notion of country –nature, place, boundaries, persona. There’s a grand poetry to these two pillars of our world, and it is essentially surreal. My theory is a visual correction of these notions.â€

In exhibiting Mr. Rose’s work, STORIE owner Fiona Cameron commented that “we are extremely pleased to present this major new body of work to the Parisian public. Matthew’s work is rich with references that literally fly off the wall. His work is intriguing, mysterious, funny and beautifully made. Matthew Rose is a master collagist with wonderful stories about life and death – and yes, God and Country – to tell.â€

Date of Exhibition: 1–30 Septembre 2011.

Place: STORIE | 20 rue Delambre 75014 Paris, France.

Horaires: 15H00 – 20H00 (except Monday).

Métro: Vavin/Montparnasse/Edgar Quinet.

More about the Artist.

Matthew Rose is known widely for his collage works and wall-to-wall-to-ceiling-to-floor installations. The artist, who graduated from Brown University (1981) with a degree in Semiotics/Linguistics, has long pulled the weeds on words and meaning, pruning images with a willful imagination. Influenced by Americans Ray Johnson, Jasper Johns, Joseph Cornell and a handful of French surrealists, Rose works late hours filtering and sifting through masses of paper and text to
recast contemporary life in a specific yet unbound book into what the artist calls his “theory of everything.â€

Working with canvas, paper, board, as well as on bottles, books and found objects there is a sense of limitlessness and exhaustion in these works. The objects can be discarded door buzzers (Chez Giselle, 2003) or his white-painted blank timepiece with its second hand clicking forward, Second Hand Clock (2009).
Little escapes the artist’s hand or mind as fodder for a provocative art work.

The artist’s works have appeared in a number of books over the last few years including The Axis of Evil (Qualiatica, Chicago, IL/2004); COLLAGE (Black Dog Publishing UK/2008); MASTERS: COLLAGE (Lark Books USA/2010); Cutting Edges (Gestalten, Germany/2011) as well as interviews in magazines (Slashstroke UYK 2011) among many others. His silkscreen prints, PAINTINGS, (text works), are permanently installed in The Boca Raton Museum of Fine Art, Florida. His collages, drawings and objects are in a wide rage of private and public collections including MoMA, NY, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, LA, California, The Boulder Colorado Museum of Art, CO, among many others.
