European Independent Film Festival

In only 6 years, The European Independent Film Festival has made waves and built a truly impressive reputation among the international film community. This event is lauded as the Sundance of Europe. The 2011 selection will screen 77 films from 25 different countries. However, as with most festivals of this nature, not all of them are feature-length. They will also screen a variety of short films, documentaries, animated films, and experimental films.

According to Scott Hillier, President of the ÉCU and Director of Photography for the Academy Award winning documentary “Twin Towers,†the films being screened will not disappoint audiences: “ÉCU 2011’s official selection slate exemplifies the passion of independent film making. These films that are made by filmmakers who are driven by a desire so strong to tell their stories that they bare their souls on the screen.â€

This year the festival will take place from April 1st to the 3rd at Cinema 7 Parnassiens, 98 Boulevard de Montparnasse in the 16th arrondissment and at the Cinema Christine Action, 4 rue Christine in the 6th arrondissment. What makes this year particularly special is that audiences will be invited to participate in special workshops that are manned by participants in the festival. People will also have the unique experience to participate in “Meet the Directors†sessions allowing intimate face-time with the directors whom will talk about the themes and problems exposed through their films.

When we are studied many generations from now, movies will be considered the art of our time. People will analyze “Citizen Kane†like we do the Mona Lisa. For like the great masterpieces of paint and sculpture, masterpieces of film resonate beyond their initial viewing. Films engage us, intrigue and captivate us, and charge us to change the way we think. A great film connects us to the foundations of our humanity, we see life through the eyes of a skilled director and crew and it moves us like nothing else can.

As they say in Hollywood, let’s cut to the chase. If you are able to, you should take advantage of this unique opportunity to see some of the films that have been generating an international buzz and might change your perceptions of the world around you.
