20km Paris Race — October 9

On Sunday, October 9, 2011, 20,000 athletes will enjoy a scenic 20 kilometer race through the streets of Paris.  Beginning at Place d’Iena below Palais de Chaillot at Trocadéro, the race goes through Avenue Foch near the Arc de Triomphe, through the Bois de Boulogne, for a 10 kilometer stretch along the Seine, past Jardin des Tuileries, Le Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Les Invalides, arriving at a finish underneath the Eiffel Tower right off of the Champs de Mars.

The course also covers passes 12 of Paris’ 37 bridges along the Seine, including some of its romantic spots, such as Pont Alexandre III and Pont de Bir-Hakeim.  The site course map may be found here.  The course is relatively flat, with less than 100 feet of elevation gain throughout.  More information about the race, here.  Although registration is sold out, it is usually possible to buy a race number a the registration booth.  Indeed, last time I missed registration I just walked around with a sign which said “Je voudrais acheter un dossard†(I would like to buy a race number).  Some people may give you their “dossard†or just charge you half (but I paid full).

The race itself is fun, with bands playing and fans cheering.  It is also by far one of the most beautiful city races in all of Europe.
