A cafe with tables and chairs outside of it

Café de Flore

On Boulevard Saint-Germain, next to the famous Les DeuxMagots and across the street from Brasserie Lipp, Café de Flore remains a popular spot to lounge, watch and enjoy some of the best café crème in all of Paris. Known as a spot for intellectuals, actors and politicians, Café de Flore frequently played host to Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre and Brigitte Bardot, to name a few. The last time I visited, in the middle of summer, Woody Allen walked by, apparently viewing possible scenic snapshots for his next movie. Lauren Bacall and Catherine Deneuve are additonal famous regulars.

The waiters in their white aprons and black ties maintain that classic Parisian feel, as does the Art Deco interior with mahogany wood paneling, gleaming brass, large mirrors and tulip lamps. Café is served in beautiful ceramic Café de Flore cups and pitchers. Although lunch and dinner fare is served, my favorite time to come is for morning breakfast or an afternoon café or dessert. For breakfast, you can order a platter of croissants. desserts, including tarte citron and tarte aux pommes are excellent. The omelets are also excellent.

Bring a book, the newspaper, a laptop or a friend or two, as there is no rush to leave and you can literally sit for hours (except during lunch or dinner time). A plethora of whiskies are on the menu, as is champagne.

Within walking distance to Eglise Saint-Germain, the oldest church in Paris, as well as Rue de Buci, a lovely marché street, Café de Flore is a wonderful spot to experience Paris any time of year. Don’t forget to visit the souvenir shop of Café de Flore just around the corner, which sells authentic ceramic milk pitchers, coffee cups and saucers, and even the original Café de Flore chairs.
