Au Pied de Cochon

Open all hours of the day, every day of the week, this old-fashioned brasserie is perfect for a mid-day snack after shopping at nearby stores like Dehillerin, or after a late night out, for an early morning rejuvenation of coffee and maybe something to soothe the stomach, like soupe à l’oignon gratinée (French onion soup).

Julia Child came here to try soupe à l’oignon at around 5 am, and if you want to try this specialty this is the place to do it — you get a big bowl of hot, rich soup topped with gruyère cheese and baguette — though there is no need to pop in at sunrise for this classic treat. Oysters and other shellfish are quite good, and desserts such as crème brûlée, moelleux au chocolat (a cake that is soft and gooey in the inside) with a vanilla custard on the side, and crêpes flambées (tableside) are reliable.

The inside of the restaurant gives you all the comforts of old Paris that you would want, and the waiters, of course, wear black tie and jackets. Beautiful painted murals, large mirrors, and tulip-shaped light fixtures given an aura of the past. White tablecloths, of course, adorn the tables. You can easily envision Julia Child sitting next to you, sipping on her french onion soup with her bags of kitchen supplies from Dehillerin under the table.

In short, Au Pied de Cochon is a nostalgic voyage to the past. Tradition, French classic dishes, and some glitter of 1940s ambiance are all well preserved at this brasserie.

Busy at all hours, no reservations are required.
